The information contained on this site is only as accurate as the information I receive. If you have authoritative information to the contrary, please contact me with corrections or more up-to-date information and I will update or correct them as soon as possible.

Statements made by others

Sometime in the early 2000s, while the site was still being hosted on the server next to my desk at the University of NSW, and while I still had a forum active on the site, someone disapproved of something that was said about him in the forums. He consequently threatened to sue the University and me (I actually had a letter from his lawyers). The University made me shut down the site, and so I moved it off to it's current domain name. However, at the time, I couldn't get a new forum up and running, nor could I get all the databases running, because I couldn't run all the necessary software on a hosted system that I was running on my own computer. In future, These technologies are however now available, and hopefully one day I will reactivate those features.

In anticipation of this, I am keeping the disclaimer I put up at the time.

While I intend to make an effort to prevent and/or remove incidents of libel and defamation, I cannot guarantee it!. The people who make defamatory or libellous statements are supposed to be mature responsible adults, and should be able to take control of themselves, their utterances, and behaviour. I am not their father or mother, and cannot and should not be held responsible for their bad upbringing, and the fact that their instructors didn't teach them the proper spirit of the dojo-kun.

on the discussion boards or guestbook on this site. They said it. I didn't!

I cannot repeat that often enough!!!!

Regardless of my legal status as "publisher" of this website and the usual arguments of responsibilities and duty of care blah blah, it is nonetheless highly unreasonable that I should be held responsible for the utterances of others. You may not like what's being said about you on this site and it may not be true etc... but it is not I who am attacking you. If it's being said here, then you can bet your black belt that it's also being said elsewhere, and in public too. Shutting down my site or sueing me or whatever is no solution to the problem, but simply covers up the symptoms. A person with bad skin can wear makeup, but the pimples are still there underneath it.

Just like those people with phalliform skulls who say unpleasant or untrue things about you, you too should be mature adults and either be able ignore it, or refute it. Or just maybe you should be listening to what others are saying and then have a think about why these people are saying it. If that fails, sort it out with the person who libelled or defamed you. Don't give me a hard time over it just because I give people a chance to air their views, outspoken though they might be!

Don't blame me if other people don't like you!

It's not my fault - it's far more likely to be your own!

Having said that - racist, sexist, hate-speech, or any other kind of vilification is not acceptable and will be removed (and posters warned and/or banned) as and when the facility for posting is re-established.
